Why Social Entrepreneurship Remains Inaccessible for Young People

In a world that's changing at breakneck speed, the importance of social entrepreneurship in addressing pressing global challenges has never been clearer. However, for many young and aspiring changemakers, the journey towards creating impactful, sustainable change can be frustratingly inaccessible.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to meet thousands of Changemakers, and speak to them about the challenges that they face in creating social change. Here are some of my observations:

Lack of a clear starting point

One of the most daunting aspects of social entrepreneurship for young people is simply not knowing where to begin. Through traditional education systems, many are taught essential academic principles but are left without the tools and knowledge necessary to address social issues head-on. As a result, young potential changemakers often lack access to the information, guidance, and resources they need to transform their passion into tangible action.

The complexity of social issues

Social challenges are seldom one-dimensional. They tend to be deeply interconnected, spanning political, economic, and cultural dimensions, and thus require multifaceted solutions. The sheer complexity of these real-world problems can be overwhelming for young entrepreneurs who may not feel well-equipped to navigate such intricate terrain.

Scarce, inaccessible, and unsustainable funding sources

Access to capital is a critical ingredient for any entrepreneur, but this is an especially pressing issue for those working on social impact projects. Grants and funding sources are notoriously scarce and difficult to access, particularly for young individuals with limited experience and connections in the industry. Moreover, even when they secure funding, it often takes the form of unsustainable one-off grants that do not provide a long-term revenue stream or promote financial independence.

4. The struggle to be heard

Finally, young people are often met with skepticism or outright dismissal when they attempt to voice their ideas and opinions in the social entrepreneurship sector. Age-old notions that prioritize experience over innovation can be disheartening and stifle the fresh, bold perspectives that young entrepreneurs bring to the table. Consequently, they may struggle to gain traction for their projects and enact the change they envision.

By understanding these barriers and acknowledging the unique challenges faced by young social entrepreneurs, we can begin addressing the root causes and pave the way for innovative solutions. UNITE 2030's mission to empower and nurture young changemakers serves as a guiding light, actively addressing these obstacles.

Unlocking Solutions: How Changemakers, Businesses, and Individuals Can Make a Difference

To ensure a more accessible landscape for young social entrepreneurs and drive the change we wish to see, each one of us has a role to play. Here are some tangible steps you can take if you're a changemaker, a business, or a regular person who wishes to contribute to creating a brighter, more inclusive future.

What to do if you're a Changemaker:

  1. Get involved with organizations that align with your values and mission – like UNITE 2030, which actively supports and empowers young social entrepreneurs.

  2. Surround yourself with like-minded people, both online and offline, to build upon your knowledge, network, and resources.

  3. Stay informed on social issues and the evolving landscape of social entrepreneurship.

  4. Take advantage of educational programs, workshops, and mentorship opportunities that can help grow your skills and knowledge.

  5. Share your ideas, experiences, and insights with others to create a supportive, collaborative community of changemakers.

What to do if you're a Business:

  1. Prioritize impact – recognize the value and importance of addressing social issues as part of your business strategy.

  2. Understand that prioritizing impact is not only good for the planet and its people but also beneficial for your business—companies with a focus on positive social impact often generate greater brand loyalty and enhanced public image.

  3. Collaborate with social entrepreneurs to develop and implement innovative solutions that address pressing social challenges.

  4. Support young social enterprises through mentoring, investment, or partnering on social impact projects.

  5. Foster a company culture that values purpose alongside profit, and create opportunities for employees to engage with and contribute to social impact initiatives.

What to do if you're not a Changemaker or a business:

  1. Donate to organizations and social impact startups that align with the causes you care about – your contributions can provide invaluable support for these entrepreneurs.

  2. Share and promote the projects, stories, and achievements of social entrepreneurs within your network – help raise awareness and inspire others to join the movement for change.

  3. Listen to the voices and experiences of young changemakers; engage with their content and attend events to expand your understanding of the challenges they face.

  4. Learn about the social issues that matter to you – educate yourself to become a more informed, empathetic advocate for change.

  5. Encourage open conversations about social issues and the importance of social entrepreneurship within your social circles, fostering awareness and fostering a culture of collective action.

It's clear that social entrepreneurship offers a powerful means to address significant global challenges. By embedding it within the mainstream, we can invigorate the changemaker movement and help build a better future for all. Let's actively support the talented, passionate young individuals who are pioneering transformative solutions, and together, let's reshape our world for the better.
